I am one of those moms who are constantly telling my kids to sit down and stop playing around while they are eating. I wont allow them to have gumballs or jawbreakers, and when they have a sucker they have to sit down until it's gone. I know how to do the Heimlich maneuver but I've never had to use it (knock on wood!)
However, the other night, it was needed in my house... by my husband ON ME! We were sitting in the living room, watching a mini marathon of Battlestar Galactica (yay netflix!) and eating potato chips. I honestly don't know what exactly happened but one minute I was discussing the social and political relevance of the current scene (even when faced with the complete and total annihilation of the human race, some people will still focus on their own agenda... but I digress...) and the next i couldn't breathe. I stood up and my husband grabbed me, first hitting me on the back, thinking i was just coughing, then he proceeded to do the Heimlich on me, dislodging the chip. It was scary and intense and it all happened so fast. My girls came out to see what the noise was and I just held them and kissed them for a good five minutes.
I have seen my husband cry only a handful of times in the 20 years I have known him. After the girls went back to bed, He grabbed me again, this time with tears rolling down his cheeks and told me not to ever do that to him again! I told him I would try my best!
The next day I was SORE but I'll tell you what.. I will take the pain and be grateful that I am able to feel it!
